5 Lesser Known Menstrual Conditions

And how Lumana has changed the game in activewear

Nearly half of the population (save for preteen women and post-menopausal women) get to enjoy the oh-so-lovely period cycle once a month.

Not only do we women have to deal with managing blood flow, buying sanitary products, and ruining our favorite pants, but we also get to experience the joys of cramps, headaches, mood swings, and bloating. In short, periods are one of the most inconvenient aspects of being a woman.

And if you are one of the fortunate ladies out there,” inconvenience” is the best-case scenario when menstruating. Other women can experience much stronger side effects that can really be a detriment to their quality of life.

Here are 5 menstrual disorders that can really be problematic for women during their period.

Amenorrhea

This is a condition in which women (about 1% of the female population) experience no blood production. This usually has to do with issues with their endocrine system, which regulates hormones. Sometimes it is a result of low body weight or delayed maturing of the pituitary gland. In certain cases, women are at risk of hip and wrist fractures.

Dysmenorrhea

Most commonly referred to as PMS, this condition is experienced by approximately 40% of women and varies from physical to psychological pain. While the severity changes with each individual, the most common side-effect is depression. Other symptoms of PMS include bloating, headaches, fatigue, painful breasts, fatigue, anger, anxiety, mood swings, crying, and depression. PMS symptoms usually begin about a week prior to the onset of your period and meliorate on the actual onset of your period begins or soon after.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

If PMS sounds bad, wait til you hear about its nasty cousin, PMDD. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder is an extreme case of PMS and significantly disrupts a woman’s daily life. Instead of generalized anxiety, you might experience panic attacks. Instead of feeling lousy, you may be so depressed you can’t get out of bed. Instead of a headache, you may experience migraines. And instead of annoyance, you may experience outbursts of rage.

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

It’s often difficult to constitute what is considered “heavy blood flow” because a lot of it is dependent on age, stress, and weight. In short, heavy bleeding is defined as interference with normal, everyday activities. About a fifth of women report having abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding, which means they are rendered helpless during everyday tasks in order to manage excess discharge. Unfortunately, there are a lot of underlying issues that may lead to excessive bleeding including:

Hormonal imbalances

Uterine structural abnormalities such as fibroids

Medical conditions (such as thyroid abnormalities, blood clotting disorders, liver or kidney disease, leukemia, complications from IUD, miscarriage, and infections)

Women who experience this medical condition often have to frequently change out their tampons, wear super size tampons, and add additional preventative measures like panty liners, and pads.

Here’s Where Lumana Comes To The Rescue

As much as we would love to come up with the cure for many of these conditions (we would probably win a Nobel Prize if we did!), we continue to be a company that strives to make women more comfortable during their periods.

Regardless of whether you are clinically diagnosed as having heavy bouts of menstrual bleeding or your first few days are heavier than the final ones - we have a solution.

Lumana athletic and leisurewear is a company operated by women who are all too familiar with the hazards of menstruation. Even with the best tampons on the market, most women have experienced the embarrassing effects when your tampon just isn’t enough and blood seeps through. Not only can it be distressing, but in many cases it ends up with your new white leggings or khaki pants in the trash.

Lumana’s variety of luxury leggings, shorts, and tennis skirts (coming soon!!) provides that extra layer of precaution when you are menstruating without compromising attractiveness. This is particularly important when you are active or working out because such activities increase blood circulation which can cause more leakage than if you were stationary.

Each Lumana piece features a built-in pad that can replace or be used in conjunction with a tampon. The padding doesn’t bunch up as you move and is easily washed for continual use throughout the years. This built-in layer also absorbs sweat, incontinence, and leakage. And their high-cut waist allows you to cover excess bloating that can occur when you’re on your period.

Boasting breathable, lightweight material with flattering cuts and beautiful colors, you’ll want to rock this athleticwear, regardless if you are on your period.
